| Recurrent
aphthae
It
is a frequent, acute disease which affects all of the
mucosa with the exception
of the gingivae and the hard palate (attached tissue).
It presents as superficial erosions or ulcerations,
round or oval, of about 2 to 5 mm in diameter, with a
yellowish tint due to necrotic tissue and surrounded by
an inflammed, reddish halo.
They appear in variable numbers, are very painful,
and cure in 8 to 10 days without scarring, only to reappear
at a later time.
Their etiology is unknown but is related to emotional
stress, menstruation, digestive conditions, microbial
or food allergies, autoimmune mechanisms, and others
