HIV
erythematous candidiasis
Patients
infected with the human immunodeficiency virus frequently suffer from
characteristic lesions of the oral cavity and in some patients the oral
lesions are the first manifestation of the disease.
Candidiasis is present in over 50% of infected patients, the
erythematous type being predominant in the primary stages and the pseudomembranous
type present in those patients who have developed AIDS.
Patients tend to have simultaneous mirror lesions on the palate
and dorsum of the tongue. At the lip commisures the candidiasis causes actinic cheilitis
