| Erythema
multiforme
It is a common condition
which arises and develops acutely, and consists of lesions which may
occur on the skin or mucosa, hands and feet; affecting children and
young people more frequently. Lesions are described as “bullseye”
or “target” due to their appearance.
Oral lesions precede, accompany or follow the cutaneous manifestations. They are seen anywhere on the mucosa. It starts with a diffuse erythema over which blisters develop
and which break easily, leaving eroded surfaces covered by pseudomembranes
which slough off in 8 to 10 days, to heal without scarring. Bloody scabs on the labial semimucosa are common and characteristic.
The oral lesions are very painful and present with an abundant
sialorrhea. The lesions may become infected and complicate the course of
the disease. (continues)
