These malformations are rare, they are more commonly acquired by diverse conditions such as : pregnancy, old age, cirrhosis and endocrine alterations.  They occur multiply and and seem to prefer the extremities and the trunk, but may also be seen in the oral mucosa, specially when they form part of Rendu-Osler-Weber disease.
