Hypertrophy
or elephantiasis
Hypertrophy is an
increase in size of a region or topographical sector of the organism. In
the mouth it is named according to location:
macrocheilia for the lip, macroulia or elephantiasis gingivae of
the gums, macroglossia of the tongue, and macropareititis of the buccal
mucosa. The term
elephantiasis is habitually used for chronic lesions, especially of
lymphatic origin; although the term hypertrophy is histologic in nature,
it is used to denote that primary lesion of great importance in the oral
mucosa. According to its
origin the hypertrophies may be toxicological, infectious, dysplasic,
hematopoeitic, metabolic, endocrinological, allergic or idiopathic.
