 Pierre Rubin Syndrome

Newborn baby girl with a cleft  palate and mandibular micrognathia

Pierre-Rubin syndrome is characterized by micrognathia, glossoptosis and cleft palate, often compromising the cardiovascular and skeletal systems as well as the sense organs and the nervous system.  The child acquires a “bird facies” and due to the glossoptosis and its respiratory consequences the tongue must be protracted forward so the newborn is not asphyxiated.  The cleft palate and the two rudimentary mandibular teeth created a feeding problem which was solved by extracting the teeth and constructing a maxillary acrylic plate.  The cast model shows how the width of the palatine fissure has decreased after using the plate.
