Orthodontics
Orthopedic
and orthodontic treatments consist of the
installation of fixed (braces) and/or functional appliances
which remain in place for a period of time that varies according
to the type and severity of malocclusion.
A large percentage of the population have teeth which are
not correctly placed in their jawbones, and as a consequence
there is an alteration of facial esthetics and chewing ability.
There are different types of malocclusions, which is why
a clinical
radiographic study is first done to achieve an
exact diagnosis and elaborate the correct treatment plan.
Orthodontic treatments can be started at any age and with
a variety of appliances as determined by the orthodontist.
These can be preventive and/or interceptive, which
hinder the malocclusion from becoming worse, or corrective
appliances which are used to solve the problem definitely.
The patient must assist to his or her appointments periodically,
approximately every 4 to 6 weeks, so the orthodontist can
do the necessary adjustments and activations to guide and
control the movement of the teeth and evaluate treatment
progress.
Some patients will need to have tooth extractions performed
in order to obtain the necessary space to correctly align
the dentition. Others will need orthognathic surgery, in order to change the
position of their jawbones when these have developed aberrantly.
When the treatment is finalized, the appliances are removed
and retainers are placed in order to insure and maintain
the results.
The average time for an orthodontic treatment is two years.
